What about retrofits? On this website, I have talked about one thing: eliminating LED streetlights. However, I might have been missing something, what if we used retrofit bulbs? If we use LED lighting that fits into the old fixtures, we can get the "savings" of LED. Plus, you can get the optics, aesthetics, or maybe even the repairability of the old HID fixtures because the mechanism of a screw base is still present. Unfortunately, even retrofit bulbs aren't immune to LED's pitfalls.
Because they are still fundementally LED, a few of the disadvantages that are described on this site will apply to the retrofit lamps. Also, using retrofits will have a quicker payback time since they aren't as expensive as a new fixture.
